Day 3-5 Post Op
Aims:
- Wound/oedema management
- Commence range of motion exercises
- Splinting
Suggested treatment:
- Remove post op bulky dressings
- Wound care as needed
- Oedema reduction – elevation and active ROM
- Gentle active and passive ROM
- Hold and place in flexion and extension
- Intrinsic stretching
- Splinting:
- Should not be required
Restrictions:
- No resistive activities or activities that apply shear forces till wound healed
Day 7-10 Post Op
Aims:
- Wound management
- Continued oedema and ROM maintenance
Suggested treatment:
- Removal of sutures
- Continue ROM, oedema control, wound care
- Scar mobilisation once wounds well healed
Restrictions:
- None
2 Weeks and beyond
- Can commence strengthening if needed
Some General Questions
What to expect after surgery:
- Most patients will be discharged on the same day as surgery, although if your pain is severe you can always have an overnight stay in hospital
- After surgery, you might notice some numbness to fingers of the operated hand. This may be secondary to local anaesthetic and will wear off over 48-72 hours.
- You will be sent home with medications or a script to help with pain relief
- You will be reviewed very early post op (within 3 days or so) by a hand therapist who will commence mobilisation and wound care management with you.
- Mr Lau will see you in the rooms at around 6-8 weeks post op, but the hand therapy team will be in contact with him to update him on your progress
Time in Sling:
- Generally your sling is only required for comfort
Return to Activity
- Work: Depends what you do. Desk based work can be done from ~10 days post operatively, if you can do these tasks single handedly.
- Drive: In Australia, you can’t drive unless you are in full control of both your arms. Therefore, whilst your hand is bandaged you cannot drive.
- Sports/Hobbies: No restrictions after 10 days if the wound has healed
